In 1664 the new English king Charles II tried to redesign local government in the Massachusetts Bay colony in order to benefit the crown. In A Constitutional Culture, Adrian Chastain Weimer explores how colonists mobilized to protect their local, elected government. They developed a strong – and long-lasting – constitutional culture in which inhabitants from across the social spectrum could articulate the grounds of their liberties and organize to fend off any imposition of arbitrary, or unbounded, rule.
